about

This song was written 2 months ago when it seemed most likely there wouldn’t be any baseball in 2020. Without a proper season to follow we figure you can just imagine games in your mind, mixing players from all generations on one glorious fantasy field together into an impossible all-star game that only you can see. Now, of course, it appears that MLB is on a crash course for a wildly reckless and ill-advised summer ahead. It’s hard to believe OR condone, so how about we just stick with the make-believe world of Bob Gibson staring down Mike Trout for a little while longer and we’ll see what happens.

Linda laid down the peppy drum track in a rehearsal room in Queens and then guitars and vocals were added by Steve and Scott in their homes located 3,000 (VERY socially distanced) miles away.

lyrics

Bob Gibson stares with fire from the mound
Pitching to Mike Trout who want to take him downtown
Manny’s in left, Clemente’s in right
DiMaggio in center under the stadium lights.
Ty Cobb is leaning off first
And Gibby snarls “C’mon Trout do your worst”
The season’s moving along just fine
Because I’ve got baseball in my mind.

It’s a breezy day at the Polo Grounds
The sun is shining and excitement abounds
Pie Traynor sees the bag and moves up front
He thinks Maury Wills might be squaring to bunt
Grover Cleveland Alexander is drunk
Mookie Betts on deck but he’s been in a bit of a funk
Nobody’s pounding cans, nobody’s stealing signs
That’s the world of baseball in my mind.

The computer jockeys finally got their way
It’s all fantasy baseball this year anyway
But what I wouldn’t beg, borrow or steal
To be in the stands looking down on the field

Tinkers to Morgan to Cody B
Nothing’s getting through as far as I can see
Until Wee Willie Keeler goes and hits it where they ain’t
But Greg Maddux is working the paint
Connie Mack strolls out, his suit is double-knit
Brings in Rollie Fingers and Mel Ott for a double switch
The game’s on hold but my imagination is working fine
Welcome to my world, I’ve got baseball in my mind
